Why is the brick cracking above my garage door or windows?
On brick-veneer homes of the era common in Cascade Township, the brick above every opening rests on a steel lintel. When that lintel rusts, it expands and lifts the brick, producing horizontal cracks or a stepped crack pattern radiating from the corners of the opening. The fix ranges from cleaning and sealing a lightly rusted lintel to replacing it and relaying the affected brick — catching it early is significantly less work.
What are the small holes at the bottom of my brick wall?
Those are weep holes, and they are supposed to be there. Brick veneer has a drainage cavity behind it, and weep holes let water that gets behind the brick escape at the bottom of the wall. They should never be caulked or mortared shut — blocking them traps water in the wall. If they are missing or clogged, they can be restored.
